ELDERSHIP

The role of eldership

WHO CAN BE AN ELDER?

This topic of who qualifies to be an elder can be a divisive issue. Yet, we see this as an important topic to address and discuss as a church while still being unified as brothers and sisters in the body of Christ. We are called to reflect the love of Jesus to the world, and as such, our posture toward others with differing views should be one of learning and love. Over this next year, we are going to open the table for discussion and learning to occur. There will be several elements involved during this process, which we outline in more detail below. We desire to be guided and led by the Holy Spirit. Please come with a posture of humility and a spirit of unity.

Let us be an example of unity to the world!

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. (1 Corinthians 1:10)

...so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. (Romans 12:5)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (Philippians 4:6)

THE PROCESS

PRAYER

This process should first and foremost be undergirded by prayer. We have put together a team of dedicated individuals that are meeting and praying for our church during this process. Will you join the team and pray with us?

DISCUSSIONS

We desire to give everyone a voice to share their thoughts, convictions and position on the topic. It is important that when we enter our round table discussions that we listen with humility, keep an open mind, seek unity and pray.

Our first discussion occurred on October 24, 2022.

Our second discussion occurred on June 12, 2023.

EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL

Follow the link below for various resources, articles, and books that can help you as you read, research, reflect, and pray over the topic of men and women in ministry.

PUBLIC TEACHING

We held public teachings that explored both viewpoints (complementarian and egalitarian) in April 2023. First, was a teaching on the Complementarian Position presented by Pastor Sundar Krishnan. Second, was a teaching on the Egalitarian Position by Pastor Bruce Edwards. Please take this opportunity to fully educate yourself on both sides of the conversation, and continue to reflect and ask questions. We continue to emphasize unity throughout this process.

If you would like to rewatch or if you missed them, please contact the office for the videos.

VOTING

The Alliance Canada policy and guidelines require a 2/3 majority vote by our membership to enable all adults to serve as elders. After having spent time throughout the year to educate ourselves, pray, and listen, our goal is to vote on this during our 2023 Annual General Meeting.

If you would like to become a member of our church, please let us know and we will be offering membership classes throughout the year as needed.
