"The Second Great Commandment" by Daniel Mills

John 10:27 – The man answered, “‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

1. Being neighbourly is not an attitude but an action

James 2:18 – Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”

Hebrews 13:16 – And don’t forget to do good and to share with those in need. These are the sacrifices that please God.

What is the action you are taking to be a good neighbour?

·    “Going over to him”

·    “soothed his wounds with olive oil and wine”

·    “took him to an inn, where he took care of him”

·    “handed the innkeeper two silver coins”

Ephesians 2:10 – For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

2. Being neighbourly requires us to step out of our comfort zone

What stops us?

·    Insecurity

·    Fear

·    Selfishness

·    Pride

·    Hurts

James 2:1 – My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?

James 2:8 – Yes indeed, it is good when you obey the royal law as found in the Scriptures: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you favor some people over others, you are committing a sin.

Acts 1:8 – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

3. Being neighbourly is a response of compassion

Times when we see Jesus moved with compassion:

·    When he saw the multitudes as sheep without a shepherd

·    When he saw many that needed healing

·    When the people listened to him for three days and he gave them something to eat

·    Healing the blind man

·    Healing the person with leprosy

·    Raising a young man back to life for the sake of his mother

Colossians 3:12 – Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

2 Chronicles 28:15 – Then the four men just mentioned by name came forward and distributed clothes from the plunder to the prisoners who were naked. They provided clothing and sandals to wear, gave them enough food and drink, and dressed their wounds with olive oil. They put those who were weak on donkeys and took all the prisoners back to their own people in Jericho, the city of palms. Then they returned to Samaria.

Acts 9:31 – The church then had peace throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria, and it became stronger as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord. And with the encouragement of the Holy Spirit, it also grew in numbers.
