"What Happens When I Die?" sermon by Pastor Kevin Rutledge

What is death?

Hebrews 9:27 - Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment

SEPARATION IN THREE DIMENSIONS

PHYSICAL DEATH - SEPARATION OF BODY AND SOUL

James 2:26 - As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

SPIRITUAL DEATH - THE SEPARATION OF GOD AND A NON-BELIEVING PERSON

Ephesians 2:1 - As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins

THE SECOND DEATH

Revelation 20:6 - Blessed and holy are those who have part in the first resurrection. The second death has no power over them, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with him for a thousand years.

Revelation 20:14-15 - Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

What causes death?

Genesis 2:16-17 - And the LORD God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

Romans 5:12 - Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned.

What happens when we die? (2 Corinthians 5:1-10)

WE LEAVE OUR DECAYING, MORTAL, PHYSICAL BODIES

2 Corinthians 5:1 - Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.

WE RESIST THE PROCESS OF DYING AND BEING WITHOUT A BODY

2 Corinthians 5:2-4 - Meanwhile we groan, longing to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, because when we are clothed, we will not be found naked. For while we are in this tent, we groan and are burdened, because we do not wish to be unclothed but to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling, so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life.

WE LOOK FORWARD TO A PERMANENT DWELLING IN A RESURRECTION BODY

2 Corinthians 5:1-5 - we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. We long to be clothed with our heavenly dwelling . . . so that what is mortal may be swallowed up by life. Now it is God who has made us for this very purpose and has given us the Spirit as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.

A BELIEVER WHO DIES WILL BE WITH THE LORD

2 Corinthians 5:6-8 - Therefore we are always confident and know that as long as we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord. We live by faith, not by sight. We are confident, I say, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Paul’s predicament: Philippians 1:23-24 - I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body. Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith.

Lazarus and the Rich man (Luke 16:19-31)

OUR LIVES AND DECISIONS IN THIS LIFE RESULT IN OUR ETERNAL DESTINY IN THE AFTERLIFE

PEOPLE ARE CONSCIOUS IN THE AFTERLIFE

PEOPLE IN HELL ARE NOT REPENTANT

MIRACLES ARE INSUFFICIENT TO SAVE A PERSON; THEY NEED THE WORD OF GOD
