"Your God is too Small" sermon by Pastor Kevin Rutledge

The real hero of the Bible

The sovereignty of God

Defined: God, as Creator and Sustainer, possesses all authority, wisdom and power to accomplish whatever he desires and for his own purposes.

Daniel 4:34-35 - At the end of that time, I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored. Then I praised the Most High; I honored and glorified him who lives forever. His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation. All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: "What have you done?"

Psalm 115:3 - Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.

Proverbs 21:1 - The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD; he directs it like a watercourse wherever he pleases.

1 Timothy 6:15-16 - God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen

Ephesians 1:11 - in him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will.

Romans 8:28 - and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Philippians 1:6 - being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

Philippians 2:12-13 - continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you to will and to act according to his good purpose.

The sovereignty of God in evangelism—God’s fingerprints

The plan of God

Luke 1:1 - Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us,

Ephesians 1:4-5 - For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.

Revelation 13:8 - All inhabitants of the earth will worship the beast-- all whose names have not been written in the book of life belonging to the Lamb that was slain from the creation of the world.

Jesus' death on the cross

Acts 2:21-24 - "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

The sovereignty of God and the sinner

Acts 2:39 - To receive forgiveness and the Holy Spirit was for “. . . all whom the Lord our God will call.”

Acts 2:47 - “The Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”

Acts 13:48 - When the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and honored the word of the Lord; and all who were appointed for eternal life believed.

Acts 18:10 - Do not be afraid or I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city."

Acts 15:11 - No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are."

The sovereignty of God and the evangelist

Acts 14:27 - On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.

What do we learn from this truth?

1.   We can’t do it on our own. It is only in God’s strength. No one can become a Christian unless God does it.

2.   We recognize our inability and so we pray. The saving is God’s work.

3.   We should be optimistic. If it is God’s plan and power—look out. Get out and share. “If God be for us, who can be against us." Expectancy.

4.   We can neither take the credit nor blame if a person believes or not.

5.   Believing that only God can save will keep us from inscrutable methods or pressure. Don’t try to make message more palatable.
