"The Beauty of Singleness" by Daniel Mills

Romans 12:4-5 – Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ’s body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.

Jesus has redeemed singleness

We all have family, cultural, and societal views of marriage and family that often devalues singleness, but Jesus turns that upside down.

Matthew 19:12 – Some are born as eunuchs, some have been made eunuchs by others, and some choose not to marry for the sake of the Kingdom of Heaven. Let anyone accept this who can.

Isaiah 53:10 – But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands.

Isaiah 54:1 – Sing, O childless woman, you who have never given birth! Break into loud and joyful song, O Jerusalem, you who have never been in labor. For the desolate woman now has more children than the woman who lives with her husband,” says the Lord.

Isaiah 56:4-5 – For this is what the Lord says: I will bless those eunuchs who keep my Sabbath days holy and who choose to do what pleases me and commit their lives to me. I will give them—within the walls of my house—a memorial and a name far greater than sons and daughters could give. For the name I give them is an everlasting one.

Singleness is temporary. Marriage is temporary. Relationship with Jesus is eternal.

The ideal is not marriage. The ideal is relationship with Christ.

Expansion of earthly Israel was through physical reproduction to be fruitful and multiply. Expansion of God’s eternal kingdom is through faith and Christ’s redemptive work: through disciple-making.

Matthew 6:33 – Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Singleness is a gift

1 Corinthians 7:7 – But I wish everyone were single, just as I am. Yet each person has a special gift from God, of one kind or another.

If you are single today, the portion assigned to you for today is singleness. It is God’s gift. Singleness ought not to be viewed as a problem, nor marriage as a right. God in his wisdom and love grants either as a gift.

-Elisabeth Elliot

Leverage your singleness for the Kingdom of God

·    Invest in your walk with God

·    Engage in disciple-making relationships

·    Serve God and serve others

·    Take risks for Jesus

1 Corinthians 7:32 – An unmarried man can spend his time doing the Lord’s work and thinking how to please him.

1 Corinthians 7:34 – In the same way, a woman who is no longer married or has never been married can be devoted to the Lord and holy in body and in spirit.

Biblical characters who were single

·    Jeremiah

·    Ruth

·    Nehemiah

·    Daniel

·    Mary Magdalene

·    John the Baptist

·    Anna

·    Paul the Apostle

·    Dorcas

·    Jesus

Romans 12:13 – When God’s people are in need, be ready to help them. Always be eager to practice hospitality.

Singleness is difficult

1 Peter 1:6-7 – There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. It is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold—though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.

1 Peter 1:8-9 – You love him even though you have never seen him. Though you do not see him now, you trust him; and you rejoice with a glorious, inexpressible joy. The reward for trusting him will be the salvation of your souls.

Being in a human family is not a sign of eternal blessing. Being in God’s family is.

Isaiah 53:10 – But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands.

Embrace your singleness

Proverbs 3:5-6 – Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.

Matthew 12:48-50 – Jesus asked, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” Then he pointed to his disciples and said, “Look, these are my mother and brothers. Anyone who does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother!”

1 Corinthians 4:15 – For even if you had ten thousand others to teach you about Christ, you have only one spiritual father. For I became your father in Christ Jesus when I preached the Good News to you.

1 Thessalonians 2:7-8 – Just as a nursing mother cares for her children, so we cared for you. Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.

Colossians 1:10 – Then the way you live will always honor and please the Lord, and your lives will produce every kind of good fruit. All the while, you will grow as you learn to know God better and better.

Understand your value in Christ

Psalm 139:13-14 – You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.

Your value and worth is not determined by your singleness or your marriage. It is based on who you are in Christ and what God says about you!

Song of Solomon 4:7 – You are altogether beautiful, my darling, beautiful in every way.

1 Peter 2:9 – For you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

Seek Contentment in Christ

No human being can fulfill your deepest desires and expectations. Only Jesus can.

Matthew 22:37-38 – Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment.

“If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world.” –C.S. Lewis

Psalm 16:11 – You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Philippians 3:8 – Yes, everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have discarded everything else, counting it all as garbage, so that I could gain Christ and become one with him.

“You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless, until they can find rest in you.” –St. Augustine
