"Punching Your Ticket to Heaven" sermon by Pastor Kevin Rutledge

God will judge everyone on the basis of their deeds or actions

2 Corinthians 5:10 - For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

Romans 2:6-8 - God will give to each person according to what he has done." To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

John 5:29 - for those who will be resurrected “who have done good will rise to live, and those who have done evil will rise to be condemned.”

Matthew 16:27 - For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father’s glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done.

Matthew 25:31-46 - The sheep and the goats are judged on the basis of how they cared for the hungry, thirsty, the stranger, those without proper clothing, the sick, those in prison.

Revelation 20:12-13 - And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done.

Revelation 22:12 - Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he or she has done.

All of us will be condemned if judged on our deeds

Romans 3:10-12 - As it is written: "There is no one righteous, not even one; there is no one who understands, no one who seeks God. All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one."

Romans 3:23 - All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

James 2:10 - For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.

Isaiah 64:6 - All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags.

Romans 3:19-20 - Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.

Even though we are judged by works we are saved by faith

Ephesians 2:8-9 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-- and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Acts 16:30-31 - He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household."

Galatians 2:21 - I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained by the law, Christ died for nothing.

Deeds are the necessary evidence of salvation

Ephesians 2:8-10 - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Matthew 7:16-20 - By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Reconciling Paul and James

Paul: Justified by grace through faith, not of works

James: Justified by deeds

James 2:14, 18, 24 - What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if a claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith      without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

How do I respond?

Examine your faith

2 Corinthians 13:5 - Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
