"Palm Sunday: Who is this King?" sermon by Pastor Daniel Mills

Zechariah 9:9 – Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem! Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding on a donkey—riding on a donkey’s colt.

Psalm 118:26 – Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

The setting of Palm Sunday

John 12:9 – When all the people heard of Jesus’ arrival, they flocked to see him and also to see Lazarus, the man Jesus had raised from the dead.

John 20:17-18 – Many in the crowd had seen Jesus call Lazarus from the tomb, raising him from the dead, and they were telling others about it. That was the reason so many went out to meet him—because they had heard about this miraculous sign.

John 12:34 – The crowd responded, “We understood from Scripture that the Messiah would live forever. How can you say the Son of Man will die? Just who is this Son of Man, anyway?”

John 18:36 – Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”

John 1:10-11 – He came into the very world he created, but the world didn’t recognize him. He came to his own people, and even they rejected him.

Psalm 118:25-26 – Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

Obedient Humility

Matthew 21:5 – “Tell the people of Jerusalem, ‘Look, your King is coming to you. He is humble, riding on a donkey.

John 13:3-5 – Jesus knew that the Father had given him authority over everything and that he had come from God and would return to God. So he got up from the table, took off his robe, wrapped a towel around his waist, and poured water into a basin. Then he began to wash the disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel he had around him.

John 13:14-15 – And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

Philippians 2:8 – He humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Luke 9:23 – Then he said to the crowd, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross daily, and follow me.”

Daniel 4:37 – Now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise and glorify and honor the King of heaven. All his acts are just and true, and he is able to humble the proud.

Selfless Love

John 12:24 – I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels—a plentiful harvest of new lives.

John 12:25-26 – Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. Anyone who wants to serve me must follow me.

John 6:15 – When Jesus saw that they were ready to force him to be their king, he slipped away into the hills by himself.

John 15:13 – There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.

Philippians 2:3-4 – Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

Deflecting Glory

John 12:43 – For they loved human praise more than the praise of God.

John 12:28 – Father, bring glory to your name.

John 17:4 I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

Psalm 115:1 – Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.

Psalm 118:22-23 – The stone that the builders rejected has now become the cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing, and it is wonderful to see.
