"God Moved In " by Nigel Paul

“The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”  – John 1:14a, NIV (The Message paraphrase: “The Word became flesh and moved into the neighbourhood.”)

“he made himself nothing …” – Phil. 2:7 “… humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross” – Phil. 2:8

To what extent did Jesus sacrifice for us?

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.”  – 2 Corinthians 8:9

How did Christ become poor?

“Follow God’s example, therefore, as dearly loved children and walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” – Ephesians 5:1-2

The MoveIn Story

How is God’s faithfulness seen in the MoveIn story?

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:3

What does it mean to be poor in spirit?

Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.” – Luke 6:20

In what kinds of ways does God want us to be poor?

“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD” – Proverbs 19:17

What does it mean to lend to the Lord?

“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families” – Psalm 68:5-6

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.” – Matthew 25:35-36

What is the significance of Jesus identifying with those in need?

“James, Cephas and John, those esteemed as pillars, gave me [Paul] and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognized the grace given to me. They agreed that we should go to the Gentiles, and they to the circumcised. All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do” – Galatians 2:9-10

What is the doctrinal significance of this passage?

Wedding Story

“But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.” - Jesus in Luke 14:13-14
