"The Character of Barnabas" sermon by Pastor Daniel Mills

Our Vision Statement: Touching our world through Jesus Christ one life at a time.

1. Barnabas was a man of faith empowered by the Spirit

Acts 11:22-24 – When the church at Jerusalem heard what had happened, they sent Barnabas to Antioch. When he arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord. Barnabas was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and strong in faith. And many people were brought to the Lord.

Acts 11:25-26 – Then Barnabas went on to Tarsus to look for Saul. When he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with the church for a full year, teaching large crowds of people. (It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.)

2. Barnabas displayed radical generosity

Acts 4:36-37 – For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus. He sold a field he owned and brought the money to the apostles.

Acts 9:27 – Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus.

Acts 13:4 – So Barnabas and Saul were sent out by the Holy Spirit.

Acts 14:1 – Paul and Barnabas went to the Jewish synagogue and preached with such power that a great number of both Jews and Greeks became believers.

3. Barnabas was a leader marked by faithfulness

Acts 11:29-30 – So the believers in Antioch decided to send relief to the brothers and sisters in Judea, everyone giving as much as they could. This they did, entrusting their gifts to Barnabas and Saul to take to the elders of the church in Jerusalem.

Acts 11:25-26 – Then Barnabas went on to Tarsus to look for Saul. When he found him, he brought him back to Antioch. Both of them stayed there with the church for a full year, teaching large crowds of people. (It was at Antioch that the believers were first called Christians.)

Acts 14:12 – They decided that Barnabas was the Greek god Zeus and that Paul was Hermes, since he was the chief speaker.

4. Barnabas overflowed with visionary encouragement

Acts 4:36 – For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means “Son of Encouragement”). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.

Acts 11:23 –  When he arrived and saw this evidence of God’s blessing, he was filled with joy, and he encouraged the believers to stay true to the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 – So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

Romans 1:12 – When we get together, I want to encourage you in your faith, but I also want to be encouraged by yours.

Ephesians 4:29 – Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.

2 Thessalonians 2:12 – We pleaded with you, encouraged you, and urged you to live your lives in a way that God would consider worthy. For he called you to share in his Kingdom and glory.

2 Corinthians 13:11 – Dear brothers and sisters, I close my letter with these last words: Be joyful. Grow to maturity. Encourage each other.
