"The Empowering Spirit in the Old Testament" sermon by Pastor Daniel Mills

The work of the Spirit in the Old Testament and New Testament:

OT: he came upon people for a specific person, at a specific time, for a specific reason or purpose

NT: he comes to fill, abide, and remain with us for ever

Isaiah 11:2-3 – And the Spirit of the Lord will rest on him—the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.

1. The Spirit Empowers us for Service

Genesis 41:38 – So Pharaoh asked his officials, “Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God?”

Daniel 5:14 – I have heard that you have the spirit of the gods within you and that you are filled with insight, understanding, and wisdom.

Deuteronomy 34:9 – Now Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hands on him. So the people of Israel obeyed him, doing just as the Lord had commanded Moses.

1 Samuel 10:10 – When Saul and his servant arrived at Gibeah, they saw a group of prophets coming toward them. Then the Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul, and he, too, began to prophesy.

1 Samuel 11:6 – Then the Spirit of God came powerfully upon Saul

1 Samuel 16:13-14 – So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah. Now the Spirit of the Lord had left Saul

2. The Spirit empowered prophets, priests, and kings

Nehemiah 9:30 – You sent your Spirit, who warned them through the prophets.

2 Chronicles 15:1-2 – Then the Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded, and he went out to meet King Asa as he was returning from the battle.

2 Chronicles 24:20 – Then the Spirit of God came upon Zechariah son of Jehoiada the priest. He stood before the people and said, “This is what God says…”

Exodus 30:30-31 – Anoint Aaron and his sons also, consecrating them to serve me as priests. And say to the people of Israel, ‘This holy anointing oil is reserved for me from generation to generation.’

1 Samuel 10:1 – Then Samuel took a flask of olive oil and poured it over Saul’s head. He kissed Saul and said, “I am doing this because the Lord has appointed you to be the ruler over Israel, his special possession.”

1 Samuel 10:6 – At that time the Spirit of the Lord will come powerfully upon you, and you will prophesy with them. You will be changed into a different person.

Isaiah 45:1 – This is what the Lord says to Cyrus, his anointed one, whose right hand he will empower. Before him, mighty kings will be paralyzed with fear. Their fortress gates will be opened, never to shut again.

1 Samuel 16:13 – So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on.

Psalm 27:4 – One thing I ask from the Lord, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze on the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.

2 Samuel 6:13-15 – After the men who were carrying the Ark of the Lord had gone six steps, David sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. And David danced before the Lord with all his might, wearing a priestly garment. So David and all the people of Israel brought up the Ark of the Lord with shouts of joy and the blowing of rams’ horns.

2 Samuel 6:17-18 – They brought the Ark of the Lord and set it in its place inside the special tent David had prepared for it. And David sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings to the Lord. When he had finished his sacrifices, David blessed the people in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

Acts 15:16 – After this I will return and rebuild David’s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it.

1 Peter 2:9 – But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.

Revelation 3:21 – Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.

3. The Spirit calls us to the Prophethood of all believers

Genesis 20:7 – Now return the woman to her husband, and he will pray for you, for he is a prophet. Then you will live.

Deuteronomy 34:10 – There has never been another prophet in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face.

Deuteronomy 18:15 – Moses continued, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him.”

Numbers 11:16-17 – Then the Lord said to Moses, “Gather before me seventy men who are recognized as elders and leaders of Israel. Bring them to the Tabernacle to stand there with you. I will come down and talk to you there. I will take some of the Spirit that is upon you, and I will put the Spirit upon them also. They will bear the burden of the people along with you, so you will not have to carry it alone.”

Numbers 11:25 – And the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. Then he gave the seventy elders the same Spirit that was upon Moses. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied.

Numbers 11:26 – Two men, Eldad and Medad, had stayed behind in the camp. They were listed among the elders, but they had not gone out to the Tabernacle. Yet the Spirit rested upon them as well, so they prophesied there in the camp.

Numbers 11:29 – But Moses replied, “Are you jealous for my sake? I wish that all the Lord’s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit upon them all!”

Joel 2:28-29 – Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on servants—men and women alike.

Ezekiel 36:27 – And I will put my Spirit in you so that you will follow my decrees and be careful to obey my regulations.

Isaiah 42:1 – Look at my servant, whom I strengthen. He is my chosen one, who pleases me. I have put my Spirit upon him. He will bring justice to the nations.

Acts 10:38 – And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

Acts 1:8 – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses

Zechariah 4:6 – ‘Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.
