"The Empowering Spirit in the New Testament" sermon by Pastor Daniel Mills

1. The Spirit leads us to Jesus

Luke 2:25-28 At that time there was a man in Jerusalem named Simeon. He was righteous and devout and was eagerly waiting for the Messiah to come and rescue Israel. The Holy Spirit was upon him and had revealed to him that he would not die until he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. That day the Spirit led him to the Temple. So when Mary and Joseph came to present the baby Jesus to the Lord as the law required, Simeon was there.

John 14:26 – But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

John 15:26 – But I will send you the Advocate—the Spirit of truth. He will come to you from the Father and will testify all about me.

John 16:14 – He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me.

Acts 2:38-39 Peter replied, “Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is to you, to your children, and to those far away—all who have been called by the Lord our God.”

2. The Spirit empowers us to lead others to Jesus

Acts 4:8-11 – Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them…he was healed by the powerful name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, the man you crucified but whom God raised from the dead. For Jesus is the one referred to in the Scriptures…

Acts 8:29-30 – The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.” Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”

Acts 10:19-20 – Meanwhile, as Peter was puzzling over the vision, the Holy Spirit said to him, “Three men have come looking for you. Get up, go downstairs, and go with them without hesitation. Don’t worry, for I have sent them.”

Acts 13:2 – One day as these men were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have called them.”

Acts 4:31 – After this prayer, the meeting place shook, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they preached the word of God with boldness.

1 Corinthians 2:4, 13 – And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit…when we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.

3. The Spirit empowers us with gifts to bless others

1 Corinthians 12:4, 11 – There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all…it is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

Some of the Gifts:

·    Administration

·    Apostleship

·    Care-giving

·    Discernment

·    Evangelism

·    Exhortation/Encouragement

·    Faith

·    Giving

·    Healing

·    Hospitality

·    Intercession

·    Knowledge

·    Leadership

·    Mercy

·    Miracles

·    Prophecy

·    Serving/Helps

·    Shepherding/Pastoring

·    Teaching

·    Tongues & Interpretation of Tongues

·    Wisdom

1 Corinthians 12:7 – A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.

2 Timothy 1:6-7 – This is why I remind you to fan into flames the spiritual gift God gave you when I laid my hands on you. For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.

4. The Spirit unites us together as one

1 Corinthians 12:13 – Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit.

Acts 2:47 – All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.
