"Embracing the Transformative Power of the Holy Spirit" - Romans 8:9-14 // Pastor Leonor Lopes

How does a caterpillar become a butterfly? Or an ugly duckling grows into a majestic swan? How does a dilapidated building become a premier sought after hotel? Or a slave trader an advocate for emancipation? No matter what the sphere is, when we witness marvelous transformations, we are awed.  Romans 8:9-14 provides good news; that we too can be transformed into the image of Christ through the Holy Spirit that has been freely given to us. The power that raised Jesus from the dead, is available to not only raise our mortal bodies but to transform us and free us from the power of sin.  We can be awed as we witness what Christ's Spirit can do in our lives.

Romans 8:9-14 (NIV)

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

Investigating the setting of Romans 8

Who is Paul?

Who is the intended audience?

Why Romans 8?

Romans 8:9 (NIV)

The Realm of the flesh vs the realm of the Spirit. Who belongs to Christ?

You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ

Romans 8:10 (NIV)

We are overcomers through the Spirit of Christ.

But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.

John 16:33 (NIV)

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

John 10:10 (The Message)

I came so they can have real and eternal life, more and better life than they ever dreamed of.

John 7:38 (NIV)

“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

2 Corinthains 4:8-9 (NIV)

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.

2 Corinthains 4:10 (NIV)

We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

Romans 8:11 (NIV)

The promise of eternal life then and now

And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.

Romans 8: 12-14 (NIV)

Our obligation and choice

Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.
