Joel 1:14 – Announce a time of fasting; call the people together for a solemn meeting. Bring the leaders and all the people of the land into the Temple of the Lord your God, and cry out to him there.

David’s Prayer of Personal Repentance & Confession – Psalm 51

Daniel’s Prayer of Corporate Repentance & Confession – Daniel 9

Repentance is to Remember, Recognize, Request, Receive

1. Remember the greatness of god

Psalm 51:1 – Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins.

Daniel 9:4 – I prayed to the Lord my God and confessed: “O Lord, you are a great and awesome God! You always fulfill your covenant and keep your promises of unfailing love..”

Psalm 51:4 – Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight.

Daniel 9:5 – But we have sinned and done wrong. We have rebelled against you and scorned your commands and regulations.

2. Recognize our sin

Psalm 51:3-4 – For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night. Against you, and you alone, have I sinned; I have done what is evil in your sight.

Daniel 9:5-6 – But we have sinned and done wrong. We have rebelled against you and scorned your commands and regulations. We have refused to listen to your servants the prophets, who spoke on your authority to our kings and princes and ancestors and to all the people of the land.

Daniel 9:20 –  I went on praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people, pleading with the Lord my God for Jerusalem, his holy mountain.

3. Request cleansing and forgiveness

Psalm 51:2 – Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.

Psalm 51:7 – Purify me from my sins, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Psalm 51:14 – Forgive me for shedding blood, O God who saves

Daniel 9:19 – O Lord, hear. O Lord, forgive. O Lord, listen and act! For your own sake, do not delay, O my God, for your people and your city bear your name.

4. Receive new life

Psalm 51:10 – Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.

Psalm 51:12 – Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and make me willing to obey you.

Psalm 51:17 – The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit. You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God.

2 Corinthians 5:17 –  This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
