"The Inheritance of the Humble" by Daniel Mills

Matthew 5:5 – God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.

The Christlike quality of humility is critical in God’s Kingdom

Jesus values humble service to others

John 13:13-15 – You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and you are right, because that’s what I am. And since I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you ought to wash each other’s feet. I have given you an example to follow. Do as I have done to you.

Jesus values humble surrender of our rights

Luke 9:46-48 – Then his disciples began arguing about which of them was the greatest… whoever is the least among you is the greatest.

Luke 9:52-56 – He sent messengers ahead to a Samaritan village to prepare for his arrival. But the people of the village did not welcome Jesus because he was on his way to Jerusalem. When James and John saw this, they said to Jesus, “Lord, should we call down fire from heaven to burn them up?” But Jesus turned and rebuked them. So they went on to another village.

John 18:36 – Jesus answered, “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.”

1 Corinthians 6:7 – Even to have such lawsuits with one another is a defeat for you. Why not just accept the injustice and leave it at that? Why not let yourselves be cheated?

Jesus values humble submission to the Father’s will

Luke 22:42 – Father, if you are willing, please take this cup of suffering away from me. Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.

Philippians 2:8 – he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Matthew 16:24-25 – Then Jesus said to his disciples, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me. If you try to hang on to your life, you will lose it. But if you give up your life for my sake, you will save it.

The humble shall inherit the earth

Genesis 17:8 – And I will give the entire land of Canaan, where you now live as a foreigner, to you and your descendants. It will be their possession forever, and I will be their God.

Philippians 2:9-11 – Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Matthew 11:28-29 – Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

Revelation 21:1-2 – Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

“O Jesus, meek and humble of heart, hear me.

Deliver me Jesus,

From the desire of being loved

From the desire of being extolled

From the desire of being honoured

From the desire of being praised

From the desire of being preferred to others

From the desire of being consulted

From the desire of being approved

From the fear of being humiliated

From the fear of being despised

From the fear of suffering

From the fear of being forgotten

From the fear of being ridiculed

From the fear of being wronged

From the fear of being suspected

And Jesus, grant me the grace to desire

That others might be loved more than I

That others may be esteemed more than I

That in the opinion of the world others may

increase and I may decrease

That others may be chosen and I set aside

That others may be praised and I unnoticed

That others may be preferred to me in everything

That others may become holier than I,

Provided that I become as holy as I should.”
